UK’s First Space Launch Site Confirmed at Mam Tor in the Peak District

The UK Space Agency has confirmed plans to establish the country’s first space launch facility in the Peak District.

The site, located near Mam Tor, was reportedly chosen after an 18-month feasibility study citing “favourable elevation, minimal light pollution, and easy access via scenic hiking routes.”

The facility, informally dubbed “Mam Tor Spaceport”, is expected to host suborbital test flights, atmospheric research missions, and eventually, low-orbit satellite deployments.

In a surprising twist that’s caught the attention of locals and space enthusiasts alike, the UK’s very first space launch site has been confirmed… and it’s not where you might expect.

Rather than building it in a remote industrial area or near the coast, officials have chosen Mam Tor – one of the Peak District’s most loved hills – as the site for Britain’s leap into the cosmos.

A UK Space Agency spokesperson said: “This marks an exciting step for the UK’s space ambitions.

Launching from the Peak District reflects our commitment to combining cutting-edge innovation with environmental sensitivity.”

Local reaction has been largely positive. One walker in the area told us: “It’s not what you’d expect up here, but if it brings investment and they respect the landscape, I don’t see why not.”

According to experts, Mam Tor was selected because of its high elevation, natural wind patterns, and “good visibility for low-orbit launches”.

What that means is: it’s high up, breezy, and has clear skies most of the time, which apparently makes it ideal for shooting rockets into space.

Visitors to Mam Tor this week might have noticed something unusual – surveying equipment, diggers, and people in high-vis jackets scanning the landscape. Early groundwork has reportedly started, with the first test launch planned for summer 2025.

(PS - Yes, this is an April Fools Day post! Imagine the scenes if they actually built a space launch site in the Peak District, especially Mam Tor!!)

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
