Two UK locations ranked as the world's leading destinations for ghost-hunting tourists

New research has revealed that two UK attractions have become the top spots for ghost-hunting tourists this Halloween, with more than 50,000 searches for 'haunted places' in the past month.

The study, conducted by travel booking company Omio, shows that two UK locations have ranked as the most popular among tourists seeking spooky adventures.

Over 50,000 searches have been made for 'haunted places,' and Omio have identified the most searched haunted destinations worldwide. The top two are right here in the UK!

The number one spot for ghost-hunting tourists goes to Edinburgh Castle, located in Scotland’s capital.

Edinburgh Castle is one of the four most haunted tourist attractions in the world, seeing a massive 5,000% increase in searches globally between September 1 and October 1.

As one of the oldest fortified places in Europe, Edinburgh Castle has a long and dark history of torture and executions. It has served as a royal residence, military garrison, prison, and fortress over the centuries.

The second place on the list is held by the Tower of London, which also saw a 5,000% increase in worldwide searches.

Famous for its resident ravens, the Tower of London is said to be haunted by ghostly footsteps, including those of Anne Boleyn, who was beheaded there by order of King Henry VIII in 1536.

Situated on the north bank of the River Thames, the Tower is centuries old and is now home to the Beefeaters (Yeoman Warders) and the Crown Jewels. During the Tudor period, the Tower was the site of executions, including Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, and Lady Jane Grey.

It’s also believed to be the place where two young princes were murdered in the Bloody Tower, supposedly by their uncle, the Duke of Gloucester.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
