In Wales, we are lucky to have such a stunning natural environment. Our rugged and uneven coastline offers not only beauty but also a sense of mystery.
While there are many popular spots for visitors, there’s always a hidden corner where you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery in peace.
The Llŷn Peninsula is home to countless gorgeous beaches. Some are well-known tourist destinations, while others are hidden treasures waiting to be discovered by walkers.
Traeth Yr Eifl, near the village of Trefor on Pen Llŷn, is one such hidden gem. Tucked away from the main road, the beach sits at the base of Yr Eifl, the final peak in the Snowdonia range.
Rising 564 metres above the coast, Yr Eifl gives this peaceful beach some of the most dramatic scenery in the region.
Near the centre of the beach, close to Trefor, it is backed by a low, grassy slope. Heading south, the slope becomes towering, craggy cliffs, creating a stunning backdrop.
Traeth Yr Eifl is mostly a pebble beach, though there are small patches of sand scattered throughout.
It’s a spacious beach but is often quiet, with visitors preferring to sit on the grassy area above. This makes it a perfect spot for a peaceful walk, especially during the Easter holidays.
While it may not be the best beach for building sandcastles, Traeth Yr Eifl is highly rated for crabbing and surfing, according to TripAdvisor reviews.
One visitor wrote: “What a fantastic find! A large breakwater, once part of the old quarrying industry, shelters some picturesque boats and makes the area a real suntrap. Not much sand, but plenty of rock pools to explore. Overlooked by the mountains, it’s such a pleasant spot.”
The beach also sits below a section of the Wales Coast Path. This particular stretch offers an easy circular walk that previews some of the incredible trails further down the peninsula, complete with spectacular cliffs and sweeping views along Trwyn-y-tal.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
