This historic village is the perfect spot for a winter walk, with its quaint streets and stunning countryside.

Tucked away in the Ribble Valley, this hidden gem is a village where time seems to have stood still for centuries.

Originally known as Bremetennacum during Roman times, it is filled with fascinating clues from its ancient past, including the remains of a Roman bathhouse.

In Roman times, bathhouses weren’t just for washing, they were social hubs where people met friends or even discussed business.

Today, the ruins of Ribchester’s bathhouse are impressively well-preserved and open to the public for free. Visitors can explore what’s left of the sweating room, warm room, and hot room.

For those eager to learn more about the village’s Roman history, Ribchester is home to Lancashire’s only dedicated Roman museum.

The museum, which started as a single-room exhibition, has grown over the years, expanding into nearby buildings with the help of Heritage Lottery funds, European grants, and other contributions.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Ribchester became a thriving centre for cotton weaving. But beyond its rich history, it’s also a place of incredible natural beauty, making it perfect for a crisp winter walk.

The village’s picturesque streets are lined with charming cottages and characterful buildings, all set against the breathtaking Lancashire countryside.

Here, locals greet you with a friendly smile, dog walkers stop for a chat, and you won’t find long lines of cars—just a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle.

No winter walk is complete without a visit to a cosy pub, and Ribchester has three to choose from. The White Bull Hotel, right in the heart of the village, is just a short stroll from the ruins of the Roman Baths.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
