Less than an hour’s drive from central London lies the birthplace of a witches’ coven.
Once known for its fairground that drew thousands of visitors each season, this historic UK village would now be described by estate agents as perfect for commuters.
It’s tucked between the M25 and the M1, with a convenient train service to Watford and St Albans.
Some unattractive new-build homes have popped up on the site of the old sports centre, but there are still many charming properties spread across the village.
In Hertfordshire, Bricket Wood has had several brickworks over the years and features a large woodland area known as Bricket Wood Common, so the name isn’t just for show.
In 1946, a man named Gerald Gardner founded a witches’ coven at one of the village’s nudist colonies.
Gardner is considered the father of modern Wicca, and he played a key role in spreading the beliefs and teachings of modern witchcraft worldwide.
After founding the Bricket Wood Coven, Dr Gardner attracted people who were either members of the Five Acres naturist club or already practising witches.
He even built a “witches’ cottage” on a piece of land he owned within the club’s grounds.
This cottage became the gathering place where he, as the coven’s high priest, and the other witches performed rituals, described in his Book of Shadows.
Today, visitors to the village may be disappointed to find they can’t just pop by the cottage to see any witchcraft in action.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
