The UK seaside town that was once a 'jewel' but is now described as a 'hell-hole'

The rise of budget airlines and package holidays has lured British tourists away from traditional seaside towns to warmer destinations abroad.

Morecambe, once a thriving holiday hotspot in the Victorian and Edwardian era, has now been described as a "hellhole" in a harsh review of the Lancashire town.

While some still admire its coastal charm and natural beauty, others claim it has fallen into decline, with some even advising people to stay away altogether.

In its heyday, Morecambe was a bustling tourist magnet, with visitors arriving in large numbers via its grand railway station. It was known for elegant accommodations like the famous Midland Hotel and striking civic architecture.

However, as more people chose to holiday abroad, traditional seaside resorts like Morecambe struggled to maintain their former glory.

One visitor on Tripadvisor wrote: “Victorians and Edwardians truly valued this seaside gem... Old photographs show its grand civic buildings, most of which have now been carelessly neglected or demolished.”

The same reviewer compared the town to a “deserted Hollywood film set,” suggesting it may have passed the point of no return.

For some, the town’s current state is simply disappointing.

One reviewer described their visit as “dreadful, dreary, and only worth it for the seafront view.”

Another was even more direct, stating: “The town is a hellhole. Avoid.”

Despite these criticisms, Morecambe Bay’s stunning coastal scenery continues to impress visitors. One person praised the views but warned: “Morecambe Bay is beautiful. Just don’t turn around—the town itself is an embarrassment.”

Not everyone shares this negative outlook, though. One reviewer described it as a “lovely family day out” and highlighted the variety of activities available for visitors.

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
