A tourism tax is planned for Wales and could be introduced as early as 2027 if approved. The Welsh Government estimates it could generate £33 million a year for councils if all 22 choose to adopt it.
Each of Wales' 22 councils will consult their communities and decide whether to bring in the charge.
The tax will have two rates: 75p per person per night for those staying in hostels or on campsite pitches, and £1.25 per person per night for other types of accommodation.
The Welsh Government says the rates are deliberately kept low compared to other countries to make it simple for both businesses and visitors to manage.
Privately let caravans will be included in the tax, but people staying in caravans they own won’t need to pay extra.
The Welsh Government says tourism is essential for local economies, but when it is unbalanced or poorly managed, it can strain local communities and harm the quality of services and experiences offered to visitors.
There are three cases where the tax will not apply:
If someone stays longer than 31 days.
If the stay is in a person’s main or only home.
If the stay is for emergency or temporary housing arranged by the council.
If someone has to pay the tax due to an emergency, like their home being unlivable because of a fire or flood, they can apply for a refund from the Welsh Revenue Authority.
Disabled people who pay the tax while travelling with a carer can also claim a refund.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
