This beautiful spot, just 15 miles from a major city, is surrounded by lovely woodlands—and there's even a chance to see a nearly extinct animal!

As the autumn sun fades and colder weather sets in, it can be tempting to stay warm indoors.

While summer is the time when UK beaches are usually packed with people enjoying the sand and sea, winter is also a great time to explore Britain’s stunning coastlines.

A perfect example is Formby Beach, often praised as a hidden gem worth discovering.

Located just 15 miles from Liverpool, this beach is bordered by desert-like sand dunes and coastal pinewoods.

Being a National Trust beach, Formby offers rare wildlife, a rich history, and breathtaking views.

Though the beach is the main attraction, the surrounding woodlands are also worth a visit as they’re home to some of the UK’s rare red squirrels, which are nearly extinct.

The red squirrel is officially considered endangered in England and Wales and near-threatened in Scotland.

Formby Beach is ideal for dog walks, long strolls, and getting fresh air. The National Trust website shares more about what the beach has to offer.

It says: “Discover some of North West Europe’s most important sand dune habitats, where rare species like natterjack toads thrive.

“Rich in history, visitors can spot glimpses of the past, from prehistoric footprints and shipwrecks to what used to be asparagus fields.

“Formby’s sweeping pinewoods are also home to the iconic red squirrel.”

Some highlights of this coastline include parking within about 50 metres of the main entrance, pet-friendly areas, and an accessible toilet.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
