The stunning emerald loch in the heart of the Highlands that must be seen to be believed

The Scottish Highlands are some of the most stunning places on Earth, yet many areas remain unexplored, making it a haven for hidden treasures.

One such gem is sure to leave you speechless. Scotland boasts tens of thousands of lochs, each with its own charm. Among them is a striking green loch that’s truly one of a kind.

Often called the Green Loch, its unusual colour is a bit of a mystery. The most likely explanation is the reflection of the surrounding trees on its surface.

Some think algae in the water or sunlight bouncing off minerals creates the effect. Local folklore, however, says forest fairies use the loch to wash their clothes, giving it its vibrant green hue.

Whatever the reason, An Lochan Uaine is one of Scotland’s most beautiful spots.

Located about 10 miles east of Aviemore, the loch can be reached via a scenic walk through Glenmore Forest. The trek takes around 45 minutes from the Allt Mor Car Park near Glenmore on the B970.

Visitors rave about the loch, which holds a perfect five-star rating on TripAdvisor. One visitor shared: “The receptionist at our hotel recommended this loch. It’s an easy 45-minute walk from the car park, and wow, it’s incredible, like something you’d see abroad. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.”

Another said the Green Loch “just appears” and called it a “special place.” A travel blogger described it as “a vibrant green-turquoise colour that must be seen to be believed.”

The forest surrounding the loch is a haven for wildlife, including red squirrels, wildcats, ospreys, golden eagles, and graceful deer. The Allt Mor Car Park is just past the snow gates at the Hayfield.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
