The secret pyramid in Scotland often called a 'natural wonder'

Scotland is full of hidden gems, but there’s one spot that continues to amaze tourists.

Known for its incredible landscapes, Scotland draws visitors from all over the world. Yet, tucked away in the Cairngorms is a surprising feature that many don’t expect to see.

If you think pyramids are only found in Egypt, think again. Hidden in the forests of Scotland’s Highlands is a pyramid that has become popular in recent years thanks to social media.

Even so, a lot of people still don’t know about it. So, what’s the story behind this Scottish pyramid?

It’s actually a cairn, a type of memorial made of stones. This one is part of a collection of 11 cairns on the Balmoral estate, most of which were built by Queen Victoria.

This particular cairn is the largest and was created to honour Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, after his death in 1861. The cairns commemorate royal family members and important moments in their lives.

To visit this special site, you can travel to the Aberdeenshire village of Crathie by public transport, then take another bus to Braemar. However, driving is the easiest way, as it’s near the Crathie Tourist Information Centre, just off the A93.

While you can drive close to the area, you’ll need to hike to the cairns themselves. The Cairngorms’ rugged terrain means you should definitely bring sturdy hiking boots.

If you’ve come to see the cairn, it’s worth exploring more of what the Cairngorms has to offer. Don’t miss the historic Badenoch region, a hidden gem located just south of Aviemore.

For something different, consider exploring the Cairngorms on horseback. With miles of trails, thick woodlands, and quiet country roads, it’s a fantastic place for a pony trek.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
