The beautiful North Wales beach that gets so crowded in summer locals stay away

People are now avoiding a beautiful forest and beach on Anglesey because it gets far too crowded during the summer.

Councillors have been told that "over-tourism" at a well-known spot on the island is having a negative impact on locals, who are now choosing to stay away.

The forest and beach near Newborough have become so busy during peak season that residents avoid going there, according to comments shared in a recent meeting and discussed by readers on North Wales Live.

The issue was raised during a meeting of Anglesey County Council’s Partnership and Regeneration Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday, April 9.

The report said: "Local people have said they no longer go to the forest or beach in the summer because it’s too crowded and has become a victim of over-tourism."

The Well-Being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 asks public bodies to improve the social, economic, environmental, and cultural well-being of Wales.

A two-year trial, running from March 2024 to February 2026, is aiming to improve traffic and access for locals at Newborough and Llanddwyn.

The trial hopes to create a good example of how to deal with problems like this. Officers have already gathered ideas from the local community and started some small changes. They’re now working on a full plan that includes short, medium, and long-term actions.

Sandra Thomas, programme manager for the Gwynedd and Anglesey Public Services Board, said officers have been looking at possible long-term solutions and searching for funding to support the changes.

They’ve also collected traffic and visitor numbers, and carried out surveys to find out how residents feel and whether things are improving. Sandra said she hopes to update the community soon so people can start to notice a real difference.

A commenter named Iagollewjones said: “Lots of locals avoid touristy places. I live just 3.5 miles from Abersoch and haven’t been there in over 20 years!”

Another user, Indigodebz, said: “Our lovely places aren’t just for locals. It’s a shame not all areas are equally known, so some places get too full. Any new rules might only help the wealthy and push others out.”

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
