There’s no denying that Torquay town centre has seen better days, but its struggles are similar to many other seaside towns.
Just along the coast, however, is a spot called “the best in the world” – and it’s full of charm and friendly faces.
This hidden gem, a part of Torquay, has one of the most amazing views in all of Devon. Sitting high on a tree-covered cliff, it looks out over Lyme Bay, all the way to East Devon and Portland Bill in Dorset.
For hundreds of years, people have admired this "romantic, rocky glen", a phrase used in guidebooks over 200 years ago.

Babbacombe is a key part of Torquay’s tourist scene and has always stayed popular. While some areas in Torquay need a refresh, Babbacombe keeps its charm with attractions like its theatre, famous cliff railway, and the fancy Cary Arms hotel.
But even these exciting places can’t compete with the star of the show – the stunning natural coastline.
There are plenty of funny stories from this lively area. One local, Ken, recalls when comedian Bernard Manning was banned from the Babbacombe Theatre – not because of his jokes, but because he used the sink in his dressing room as a toilet! Whether that reflects on Babbacombe or not is up for debate.

Even though tourism is changing, Babbacombe has managed to stay the same in many ways. You won’t see much sign of homelessness or drug problems, and there are no flashy shops or loud arcades.
Instead, the fun here comes from walking along the Downs or relaxing in a hotel bar with a view of the sea.
People have been holidaying in Babbacombe since the 1800s. Back then, before it became a tourist spot, locals made their living by fishing along the coast.
The area’s most famous person is John “Babbacombe” Lee, who came from nearby Abbotskerswell. He became known for surviving three failed attempts to hang him, after being found guilty of killing his employer near Babbacombe Bay.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
