England’s most beautiful driving route has been revealed, and whether you travel by car, bus, or even on foot, it’s a journey worth taking.

The Lake District is famous for its breathtaking scenery, making it a perfect destination for hiking, sightseeing, and long walks.

Each year, nearly 16 million visitors come to explore its stunning landscapes, whatever the weather. But while most people focus on walking, fewer consider taking in the views from the comfort of their car.

Many incredible routes stretch from Scotland down to the Peak District, and driving makes them accessible to everyone, regardless of fitness level.

A survey of 1,500 drivers has named the UK’s favourite scenic drives, with the 29.8-mile route from Kendal to Keswick in the Lake District coming out on top.

This stunning drive, chosen by 22% of respondents, has been praised by the travel site windurshcardstorage.com.

The website describes it as: “Tied for the title of Britain’s most beautiful road, this magical stretch winds through the Lake District, passing dramatic Lakeland fells and following the shores of sparkling Lake Windermere.”

Covering just under 30 miles along the A591, the route takes around 56 minutes one way. But you don’t even need a car to experience it.

Starting in Kendal, the road leads through the charming market town of Ambleside, where you’ll find cosy cafés, independent shops, and welcoming restaurants.

From there, it passes along the shores of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, where visitors can enjoy boat trips or simply relax and take in the view.

Further along the A591, you’ll arrive in Grasmere, a village best known for its connection to the poet William Wordsworth and his former home, Dove Cottage.

Finally, the road reaches Keswick, a lively town on the northern shore of Derwentwater. Keswick is packed with attractions, including museums, galleries, and a thriving market. The lake also offers plenty of activities, from hiking and cycling to water sports.

For those who prefer to explore on foot, it’s possible to hike from Keswick to Kendal. The journey takes around 10 hours and 38 minutes—not for the faint-hearted, but a great way to kickstart those New Year’s fitness goals!

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
