Small UK island feels frozen in the 1950s with power switched off each night

Puffins can be spotted around the island, and dolphins often play in the surrounding waves. However, this destination loses its electricity every night.

A tiny British island, seemingly frozen in the 1950s, has its power cut off each night.

Located just off the Devon coast, this spot only secured internet access in 2022 and still has no power overnight.

Lundy, in the Bristol Channel, is a sanctuary for people and a wide variety of birds, which are a major attraction in the area.

Puffins nest along its cliffs, while dolphins frequently appear in the nearby surf.

The island, only three miles long and one kilometre wide, was donated to the National Trust by a millionaire in the 1960s. Its pub serves alcohol during regular hours, but its doors never close.

It’s the only place on the island with power after the generators shut down, providing a gathering spot for residents and visitors. The pub also serves as Lundy’s only restaurant, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Most visitors come for peace and the rich wildlife. The island’s special environment makes it a refuge for many rare species.

The cliffs on Lundy’s west side house puffins in a 15:1 ratio to the island's human residents. Its calmer eastern shore provides a safe spot for migrating birds.

Lundy is also home to pygmy shrews, the UK’s smallest mammal, as well as rabbits, deer, sheep, goats, cows, and pigs. The surrounding waters are full of seals, dolphins, whales, porpoises, and vibrant corals.

Getting to Lundy from London takes about five hours. You can reach it from Paddington to Barnstaple via Exeter, then by a 1958 ferry from nearby Bideford.

Described as a small lump of 50-million-year-old granite rising from the Atlantic, it’s a true escape.

The Marisco Tavern, the island’s only pub, built from granite blocks cut by quarry workers, serves as the main gathering spot in this remote sea community.

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
