A group of holidaymakers has decided they won’t return to North Wales after experiencing what they described as a strong anti-English attitude from some of the locals.
The group, made up of seven women from Lancashire aged between 55 and 70, had gone on a four-day walking trip to Llanberis to enjoy the stunning scenery. However, they said their trip was spoiled by negative comments directed at them because they were English.
They also shared that they felt ignored in local pubs and restaurants, where they struggled to get served and felt unwelcome.
Amy Hurst, a 56-year-old from Clitheroe, is part of a local group called Women That Walk, which encourages women to explore nature. She said the group faced a lot of negativity towards the English throughout their trip.
The mum-of-one explained, "The dislike for English people in North Wales was shocking. We definitely won’t be going back."
Ms Hurst, who owns a flower shop, shared that the group first sensed something was off when they got to their Airbnb on 30th August.
She explained, "We were just walking down the street, and one of us made a comment about there being a funeral care business nearby."
"A man overheard us and jokingly said, 'It's free for the English!' It felt a bit odd," she added.
The next evening, Ms Hurst said the group went into a pub, where they heard someone say, "Let’s not bother with them, they're bloody English."
