Birmingham is well known for its many beautiful parks, including Cannon Hill, Sutton Park, and Small Heath Park, each with its own unique character.
But the city is also home to several ‘secret gardens’, hidden green spaces that many people don’t even realise exist. Some are easy to find, while others take a little local knowledge to uncover.
These secret gardens offer peaceful escapes, whether you’re looking for a quiet walk, a scenic picnic spot, or just a break from the busy streets.

One of these hidden gems is Pebble Mill Playing Fields, which sits alongside the River Rea, just south of Edgbaston. It’s tucked away behind houses on Kitchener Road, making it a peaceful spot away from the crowds.
You can reach it via the Rea Valley cycle route, with several entrances leading into the space. One entrance on Kitchener Road stands out, marked by a striking mural of a girl resting her chin on her hand.
Another secret escape is Moseley Park and Pool, hidden behind residential streets. Just under two miles from the city centre, this beautiful 11-acre park has three entrances on Alcester Road, Salisbury Road, and Chantry Road.

Many people know about Birmingham’s connection to J.R.R. Tolkien, especially his childhood spent around Wake Green Road.
But how many have actually visited Moseley Bog, the real-life inspiration for Middle-earth?
This remarkable place is filled with wooden boardwalks and bridges crossing through marshy, boggy landscapes. It’s hard to believe it sits right next to a 1970s housing estate.
Despite its urban surroundings, it’s a fantastic place for an afternoon wander. And who knows? You might even feel like you’ve stepped into a Hobbit’s world.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
