Devon's ultimate road trip showcases hidden gems and is a must do for 2025

With endless stretches of stunning coastline, it’s no wonder the South West is a brilliant place for a scenic drive.

Not only will you reach some amazing destinations, but if you choose the right route, the journey itself will be just as enjoyable thanks to the gorgeous views.

One such route is the Atlantic Highway, a 98-mile stretch of road running from Barnstaple to Newquay in Cornwall.

Along the way, this route offers easy access to some of the finest spots in both Devon and Cornwall.

The Atlantic Highway, also called the A39, has even been crowned the "best" road trip in the UK.

According to Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, the road is surrounded by rolling countryside, and if you’re in a taller vehicle, like a campervan, you might even catch glimpses of the sea.

Starting your journey in Barnstaple, you’ll pass through a series of charming Devon towns as you head south.

At the Heywood Road Roundabout, you could make a detour to visit the sandy shores of Westward Ho! or the picturesque harbour at Appledore.

A bit further along the A39, you’ll find family-friendly attractions like the Big Sheep and the coastal gem of Buck’s Mills. Soon after, you’ll reach the cobbled village of Clovelly and the rugged cliffs of Hartland.

As you cross into Cornwall, the first highlight is Morwenstow, located about three miles off the A39.

Morwenstow is home to the smallest property owned by the National Trust – a tiny hut built by Reverend Hawker in 1843 using driftwood from the nearby shore.

This area also offers plenty of beautiful walking trails, perfect for taking in the fresh sea air. Further along the route, you’ll find Widemouth Bay.

As its name suggests, Widemouth Bay has two large beaches that join together when the tide is low. It’s a great spot for drivers to stop, grab a bite to eat, stretch their legs, or simply relax by the sea.

Remember - LeaveNoTrace!

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!

Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
