This beach in Devon which was once a popular spot, was closed for several years due to storm damage but is now being brought back to life.
This hidden gem, which only the most adventurous visitors dared to explore in recent years, is being restored to its former glory.
It's a beautiful sandy cove on the outskirts of Torquay, and was one of the resort’s favourite destinations. The circular bay is surrounded by steep, wooded cliffs, and can be reached by a steep road leading down from a free, unsurfaced car park.
However, storms and flooding severely damaged the access road and tore up the concrete steps, forcing the road to Watcombe Beach to close over four years ago. Waves had already destroyed part of a concrete platform near what used to be a café and shop.
In February 2020, Torbay Council officially closed the beach due to the damage, but some determined visitors continued to make their way through the wooded valley to reach the sea.
A sign stating the beach was closed was put up on a steel barrier, blocking the access road beyond the main car park.
The steep road was badly damaged, with large cracks and even a drop several feet wide at one point. However, the path leading back down to the beach was reopened last summer, allowing walkers to return.
The steps that once led from the platform to the beach had been twisted and broken by the force of rocks and concrete.
The section of the platform that began to crumble in 2020 eventually collapsed entirely, leaving behind jagged rubble and twisted metal on the beach.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
