This hidden gem of a town attracts fewer visitors than some popular hotspots but has been rated as a top destination.
A beautiful seaside town known as the 'capital of seafood' and the 'best town in Scotland' might surprise you with its relatively low number of tourists.
Despite its gorgeous scenery, historic buildings, and high-quality fresh food, this little gem in Argyll and Bute remains a bit of a hidden gem for travellers.
An older demographic of visitors and aging infrastructure once led to a dip in tourism, but recent investments have sparked a revival in the area.
Oban’s comeback hasn’t gone unnoticed, as it was recently named Scotland’s Town of the Year in the Scotland Loves Local Awards.
Highlights for visitors to Oban, which is about a two-and-a-half-hour drive north of Glasgow, include hiking and camping on one of the six Hebridean islands just offshore.
Outdoor activities also abound, with plenty of spots for fishing, both onshore and offshore. Afterwards, you can enjoy a whisky at the historic Oban Distillery.
Food and drink are central to the Oban experience, with the local tourist board saying, "Oban is the 'Seafood Capital of Scotland,' offering some of the finest seafood in the world.
"The cold, clear waters produce a variety of top-quality fish and shellfish, including oysters, mussels, langoustines, prawns, scallops, crab, mackerel, haddock, herring, and squat lobster."
For those who aren’t big on seafood, award-winning restaurants and pubs serve local Argyll venison, beef, duck, and lamb.
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
