Often called one of Wales’ hidden gems, this hidden gem is a beautiful sandy cove just over two hours’ drive from Liverpool.
With its crystal-clear water and stunning sunsets, this beach is well worth the journey from Merseyside for anyone seeking a staycation destination.
Nestled between two headlands on the western side of the Llŷn Peninsula, it feels more remote than the beaches many are familiar with in Liverpool and Wirral.
Lonely Planet has named Porth Iago the best wild camping beach in Wales, and the Sunday Times described it as the peninsula’s “prettiest beach.”
The nearby campsite even won the North Wales category of Channel 4’s The Perfect Pitch series.
On some days, you might catch sight of seals and dolphins playing in the waves. While many visit for a swim, it’s also a popular spot for fishing.
From the rocks on the northern side of the cove, anglers often catch bass, pollack, and whiting. Access to the beach is via a small farm, which charges a parking fee, so be prepared before you arrive.
There are no facilities at the beach, so it’s important to bring everything you need. Dogs are welcome, but they must stay in the car when passing through the farm.
Alternatively, Porth Iago can be reached from the Wales Coast Path, making it a fantastic stop if you’re exploring the North Wales coastline.
One Google review reads: "If Carlsberg made campsites, this would be it. Just the best landscape ever. Pay to enter via a modern digital unit, drive CAREFULLY through a working farmyard, head down to the headland SLOWLY, and pick your spot. All new facilities. Spotless. Breathtaking."
Another review says: "One of our must-visit beaches whenever we’re in Wales. The shape of the cove means you feel the warmth of the sun even on windy days. Be mindful of the descent to the beach—there are no steps, so it can be tricky. Pack lightly or be prepared to make multiple trips."
Remember - LeaveNoTrace!
As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
