With links to the legendary outlaw Robin Hood and a magical beauty that "feels like something straight out of Lord of the Rings," this incredible forest walk is a must-visit in any weather.
Hidden deep in Staffordshire’s Back Forest, this hidden gem is a 100-metre-long and 18-metre-deep moss-covered chasm that feels like a secret doorway to another world.
Formed by a huge gritstone landslip, this natural wonder doesn’t look anything like a traditional church. Instead, it’s a mysterious Peak District gorge, draped in moss, so enchanting that visitors have described it as “a stunning and otherworldly experience.”

Close to the Roaches in Leek, the chasm attracts walkers, runners, and explorers keen to discover its twisting paths and ancient, mossy walls.
Sitting just over a mile from the village of Gradbach, the only way to reach Lud’s Church is by taking a scenic 30-minute walk through the peaceful Back Forest.
More than just a hidden valley, this magical place is packed with history, making the journey to find it even more worthwhile.
In the 15th century, the chasm was a secret meeting place for the Lollards, followers of John Wycliffe, who spoke out against many of the Roman Catholic Church’s teachings.

Often hunted for their beliefs, the dense forest and towering moss-covered walls provided the perfect hideaway from those seeking to arrest them.
According to the Visit Peak District and Derbyshire website, Lud’s Church is also home to some incredible legends. One of the most exciting is that Robin Hood and Friar Tuck once used the chasm as a secret hideout while escaping the Sheriff of Nottingham.
A much darker tale from further back in history claims the deep crack in the earth was made by the devil himself, clawing at the ground with his fingernail.
You can reach Lud’s Church via different walking trails from the Roaches, Back Forest, and Gradbach, making it a must-see for history lovers, myth hunters, and anyone looking for a truly unique adventure.

As with anywhere outdoors, kindly keep these areas pristine and wild by taking all trash with you. The amount of complaints we have seen since the pandemic is crazy. It's really not that hard to take your rubbish with you!
Litter tends to spread, so if you see any and are able to pick it up and dispose of it outside the hidden gem, it will help keep the area tidy.
